K. Senthil kumar is the founder of Palam NGO. A devoted social activist, he is a veteran in this field with a full-fledged experience of about twenty five years in various sectors like poverty alleviation, Disaster relief as well as providing rehabilitation measures to the people. He also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology to his credit.
The Tsunami in 2004 had brought with it a wave of destruction that had nearly swallowed the entire state of Tamil Nadu. The PALAM- NGO formally established in 2006 has been involved in providing relief and arranging for rehabilitation work during the Tsunami in 2004 in Nagappattinam district of Tamil Nadu. The NGO has, till date successfully completed the construction of permanent houses and public toilets as a part of their work.
Their main objective is to provide Disaster Relief during Natural Calamities and other Rehabilitation assistance as per necessity. Concerned with Disaster Risk and management they aim to implement sustainable agriculture and other environment related programs through seminars, workshops, and training to the Agricultural sector. They are also engaged in starting technical training centres for the poor to impart medical aid to them as well as run dispensaries and organize awareness campaigns.
Baby care centres as well as night school provisions are arranged by the organization to encourage feasible education for the poor. Further they focus on child welfare care projects along with many programmes for the development of the children. They also provide skill development training and job opportunities to the rural youth along with women. For all round development, their final objective is to construct houses, schools and hospitals for the needy.
The NGO has shown its diligence during the Nisha Storm when they had worked together with the authorities to provide relief. They have also been an important presence during the Neelam Storm in 2012 and the surge of flood in 2015. They had further engaged in rescue operations in 2017 in Kanyakumari. Beyond the active participation, they have also taken part in the Tsunami rescue rehearsal organized by the State Disaster Management team; performing demonstrations as well as offering training to various communities.
