Mr. Jamilur Rahman ( Founder & Managing Director )

From the Founder’s Diary

After having completed a computer diploma course in 1994, Mr. Jamilur Rahman went on to become a successful professional in the tech circuit. However, he always felt the need to start a not-for-profit organisation to enable women with skills that will prove essential while fetching livelihood for themselves. With the vision of eradicating the existent imbalance in society, Mr. Rahman founded Birbhumir Grameen Unnayan Society in his home district, Birbhum, in 2004. Providing skills to women and children, who belong to less opportune backgrounds, which will last a lifetime— is Mr. Rahman’s primary goal.

Popularly known for its distinct red coloured soil and the proud home to Tagore’s magnificent Visva Bharati University at Shantiniketan, the district Birbhum is a land of many wonders. But amidst all things good, the place is maimed by in education, inequality and lack of career opportunities, especially in rural Birbhum.

Birbhumir Grameen Unnayan Society, founded in 2004, works relentlessly to impact the lives of hundreds of women and children in the diverse West Bengal district of Birbhum. It aims to strike a balance in the society by equipping its women and children with many educational and vocational courses, as well as livelihood programmes. Working directly on projects undertaken by Govt. of West Bengal, the society helps implement many government-funded programmes to the grassroots. Birbhumir Grameen  Unnayan Society has collaborated with big names like Microsoft and NASSCOM to help them run their computer literacy project and rural development programmes respectively, and disburse the benefits to the people of rural Birbhum.

Running many programmes and courses in tailoring, hand embroidery, nursing, Birbhumir Grameen Unnayan Society now works directly with and trains almost 400 women. Society is growing at a fast pace and has opened up training centres in many other places of West Bengal like Alipurduar, Coochbehar, Arambagh etc. Aiming towards a culturally diverse but equal society, Birbhumir Grameen Unnayan Society works round the clock to enable women to fend for themselves which opens new horizons for them.
