From the Founder’s Diary

Dr. Subimal Dutta has had a lifelong passion to elevate the circumstances of those on the margins of society. Hailing from Cotai in Bay of Bengal, he initially served as the priest in a church. He first visited West Midnapore for religious purposes and was struck by the superficiality of the charity work done by the trusts in the area. The chief focus was on religious activities, without any practical steps to address the ongoing crisis of widespread alcohol-related violence and frequent child marriages. Dr. Dutta decided to step in and took it upon himself to free women and orphans from the clutches of chronic hardship. He started to work in homoeopathic channels and collaborating with the local population. With their support, he opened up an office in April 1995 to consolidate his work. At this time, he was working with several different communities. He had also established chambers and dispensaries to bring inaccessible amenities closer to the people of West Midnapore. This was the foundation of Ambassadors Service Society, which has now grown into a thriving team of 37 members.

ambassadors service society works with vulnerable children, women and disadvantaged social groups in west midnapore district of west bengal. it was established in 1995 by dr. subimal dutta.

the ngo has set up 4 orphanages in different locations in west bengal. the children of these orphanages are counselled about the ill-effects of liquor addiction since over-consumption of cheap liquor is the root cause for a lot of physical and emotional abuse in the households of their area. the society also spreads awareness about the evils of child marriage and intervenes in any potential cases of minors being married off.

to ensure better access to healthcare for the citizens of midnapore, ambassadors service society has created a homoeopathic dispensary. it administers treatment for chronic diseases and provides trauma counselling, especially to the tribal population in the area.

the ngo has also organized self-help groups for women which provide them with training and loans, and teach them how to save money in their bank accounts. they learn tailoring, embroidery and other skills in these self-help groups. some of them have gone on to open their own enterprises, while some use their pastoral skills to rear livestock.

the ngo also conducts counselling classes for girls of ages 14-18. in these classes, they are enlightened about the importance of education and how it is the most significant avenue for a better life. they are also counselled on the topic of child marriage and teenage pregnancy. the counsellors are volunteers from many walks of life. some of them are iit professors, block development officers, cdpos (child development project officers) and local college students.

Events

awareness through entertainment

Entertainment has time and time again proven to be an effective tool for communicating important messages. Ambassadors Service Society has created a memorable impression on the women and children it works with, through the medium of dance, drama, comedy and music. These programmes have been conducted in both West and East Midnapore during October, November and December of 2019. The performers were both children and adults from the surrounding localities. The chief aim was to spread awareness about social issues plaguing the area. Drama has been an important vehicle to showcase the perils of child marriage and its long-term detriments.

Songs of Rabindranath Tagore were also frequently sung, to boost familiarity and keep the attendees connected with their roots.
